Mish, does your car have electronic or hydraulic hicas? If you want to fix the problem, use a diagnostic guide to diagnose the error codes produced. It's procedure is simlure to diagnosing a home pc. A home pc beeps at you when there is a hardware problem. The amount of beeps made represent what the problem is. Diagnostics are there to be used and not to be ignored. Most people just normally say "It's too hard so i will just pull it out". Thats slack i think. The R32 GTR we just bought recently has the hicas light on all the time and i intend on fixing it finding out the cause of the issue. On the other hand, the hicas system in the V8EATER will be getting ripped out as the car is too hard to control when it's a slide.
Here's what i think the problem is. Hicas ecu is going into limp mode causing it to have heavy steering. Either caused by a bad earth some were, a bad electrical connection, hicas ecu has a problem or there is something not right with the steering position sensor on the steering wheel. Until you start diagnosing the issue, you will never know what it is.

Quick Google search; in most cases, HICAS computer being faulty/cooked renders same effect as limp mode, =heavy steering.
HICAS isn't too bad, even when you're being silly, just be conscious of rear wheel speed. Low speeds = steering opposite to front wheels (for tighter turning circle), higher speeds = steering with front wheels (makes changing lanes at highway/freeway speeds a bit smoother), so doing a great big dardy skid with wheel spin from 30kmp/h right up to 90+, the steering will snap and go the other way.

From what I've read, HICAS induces understeer cos Nissan thought it was safer then oversteer? Either way, it's up to Mish whether she keeps it or not, but throwing the HICAS rack out and locking it up isn't going to affect the ECU which is obviously the issue here. When I had it the steering never played up, just the light came on, but it was worth changing the wheel just in case.
