curtousy? no i dont think thats it
Its called Sarcasm Mike
Back in the 80's & 90's it was popular to have spotlights on the front on your car and everybody used them. I guess the driving light as they call it has taken over from them and traffic cops consider them to be dangerous to oncoming traffic not to different to hi beams in their view. There was an accident outside my house a few years ago and the cop absoloutly paid out on a guy in a Commodore ute who had his driving lights on and it wasnt even dark.

I've got a switch for them and the cop pointed it out. I was like fuck! He told me to turn them off. I was like why do I have to turn them off for, there driving lights? The cop was like, nah there fog lights.
Fog lights are yellow or orange.
Driving lights are clear.
My lights on the front of the 34 are clear.

So Paul, I've got little driving lights on the front of the 34 and I went through a booze bus and they said I've got to turn them off. I was like WTF man they are part of the car lights (but there not really).

I never said the cops were smart lol I may be wrong but the fact they are not directly wired to your headlights tells me they are a seperate light and should probably be used under the same rules as spotlghts. As an ex long distance truck driver i can tell you that people that came at me during the night with driving lights I did find it difficult to see even after they had lowerd their highbeams. The question I ask is would you like to blind the guy coming at you in a roadtrain that ways over 54 tonne and over 30 metres long?

Wrong dude. Difference between fog lights and what I think you are referring to, Daytime Running Lights, is the light pattern. Fog lights are seperate to the headlights and MUST be either yellow or white, rear ones must be red. They are designed to improve visibility in poor conditions, and it is against Australian Road Rules to use them otherwise as the blind oncoming drivers.
Driving lights are used to supplement high beams and are wired to turn on when the high beams are switched on.
Daytime running lights, which is what I think you believe your lights to be, are lights that are wired to switch on when the engine starts and are designed to make the vehicle easier to see to other drivers, such as the LED lights and angel eyes on Audi´s/Beamers etc.
As your lights are on a seperate switch they are clearly fog lights. Just switch them off dude, they do nothing for you if it isn´t foggy but the do blind other drivers.
