few ppl say carbon fibre/fibre glass bonnets are illegal, some people say u can get permits for them?
i know few ppl on here run them so whats the deal, can anyone back this up maybe with a link to a legislation?!?

Pre 1994 cars are allowed fibreglass. Nobody is allowed CF.

Now from my personal experience the engineer wouldn't allow it on my car, the pits wouldn't either even after i blocked off the reverse vents as you suggested. Whether there is legislation that allows it or not, your engineer and vehicle examiner at the time of inspection have the final say.

The only info i got from my engineer was that the fibreglass bonnets must be structurally sound, what this means is that for it to be legal it must meet certain testing criteria, i don't know the exact details of this testing procedure as i didn't bother asking, from my limited knowledge of materials I am assuming it has to do with the bonnets performance under different types of loading, some kind of hardness testing and most importantly yield strength of the bonnet in its final state as this would determine how easily the bonnet would break if it had any kind of impact and whether it would shatter into a million pieces or not. As a result this testing would no doubt be very expensive.

This is why some manufacturers pay big money to have their fibreglass bonnets ADR approved. I wasn't game enough to have mine tested hence i didn't pursue this issue further(just got a gtr bonnet which is alot lighter anyway only dry carbon would be lighter than the aluminium bonnet in my opinion and these would be too expensive to make).

Yeh this car is amazing, saw it being built at Tom and Walker's mechanic.

It still frustrates Pete, spoke to him about it yesterday, said he doesn't even want to think about it, it would have been less work to build a car from scratch

good thing carbon fibre and fibre glass bonnets are illegal because they dont 'bend' in car crashes. take that australian department of licensing's beliefs.

It's probably consistency. If they shatter every one in 10 crashes, that's still once too many.

Also the fact that if it doesn't bend then you have a big razor blade pointed right at your throat.
